ECB Outlines Accessibility Features of Digital Euro App

The European Central Bank has outlined the accessibility features built into its planned digital euro app. According to a single report, the app goes beyond the requirements of the European Accessibility Act, and exceeds the standards set out in the European Accessibility Act and EN 301 549.

Testing and Collaboration

The accessibility proposal was developed in collaboration with consumer organisations, accessibility experts and national central banks. Usability testing involved members of the ONCE Foundation for Cooperation and Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities, along with staff from the ECB and 19 national central banks.

The ECB plans to begin testing in 2027, with the app's pilot launch also scheduled for 2027.

Access Channels

The digital euro app is intended to be one of several ways for people to access basic digital euro services. Users will also be able to use channels offered by their payment service providers, reflecting the Commission's legislative proposal that people should be able to choose the channel that best meets their needs.
